Colts not wanting Ironic finish to season
Posted on January 10, 2010 at 12:56 AM.
What seems like an eternity ago the coach of my New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, made the coaching error of the year going for it on fourth and 2 in the waning minutes of the Pats greatest test of the season despite the Pats being up by 6, on their own.28 yard line. Or was it?

Up till this point this coaching decision has been the lowlight of all coaching decisions. We have had some bad; I mean really bad coaching decisions this year, but Belichick’s stands below them all. Zorn’s decision to fake punt , the same play, twice in a row, pretty bad coaching decision, but not Belichekian not in the least. More stupid than anything.. It was kind of like playing a sports video game and talking yourself into running the same crazy play you just failed on because you think it may catch your opponent off guard. It barely works in video games and it never works in the NFL. Downright dumb yes, but not even on the same rating scale as the Pats move. Colts removing their starters in a game that gave their coach, Jim Caldwell, his first, yes his FIRST ever loss and his team’s first loss of the season eliminating them forever from being mentioned in the same breath as the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Debatable at the very least but is a choice that might help you win a Superbowl at the risk of losing a perfect season to be considered as big of a gaffe as the 4th an 2 patriot mishap? Heck, some would not even call it a mistake and look at it as a smart move to prepare for their playoff run. I for one, think, that anytime you have the opportunity to be put in the record books as the best EVER, you need to do what needs to be done to get there. Unfortunate decision yes, unfathomable, not really So if clearly, Belichick made the most indefensible coaching move of the regular season why would I question whether it truly is?

Isn’t the result of an action a key measuring stick of how bad a decision actually is? We all have seen examples of this. Even as a Pats fan, I can admit that the seriousness of Tom Brady’s injury last led to the new rule prohibiting players from lunging at over protected Quarterbacks feet. If Brady twisted his ankle or did not sustain an injury would the rule have been implemented, of course not? We see this all around us. So if this is true lets look at what Indy’s first year coach ‘s decision to pull out Peyton and company may ultimately cost the Colts. We already know it cost the Colts a chance to finish out a perfect season but it could end up being much more. Lately much has been made of the Colts in essence giving a win to the Jets and preventing other deserving, sorry semi-deserving teams from making the playoffs. The Jets literally had ZERO chance of making the playoffs if Indianapolis didn’t lose to the Jets in what they viewed as a meaningless game. But in their decision to take it easy they gave the J.E.T.S. some hope that they could make the playoff and a rare chance that they might be able to hang with the Colts if their paths were to cross again. The might play again. The Jets could be playing Indy next week and will not only be looking at chance to advance in the playoffs but also at a chance of having my coach known for making the second worse coaching decision of the year and thus leaving all Colts fans wondering if they would have won the Superbowl if they had tried to win a meaningless game against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs and who would not be there if not for Coach Caldwell’s decision. Next weekend I will be propped in front of my TV in all its high definition glory rooting on the JETS for the first time in my life. Not for a love of NY but as most NE, NY and PHI fans can attest, sometimes there is redemption in other’s misfortunes and I am looking forward to some other team than my Pats being known for making the worse coaching decision of the year. What an Ironic ending that would be.

Go J.E.T.S, jets, jets Jets… at least until they meet the Pats in the AFC Championship.

Ok…maybe I stretched on the Pats making that far but a fan can wish for the unlikely.

WOW! Uh....No! Even your ex Patty Rodney Harrison said," The NFL should not interfere with the benching of stars when a team doesn't need the victory." I think your a little sore from the Welker knee debacle, but thats just my opinion. I would have loved to do something the Pats couldn't get done, or wait we did it's called the most wins by a team in a decade. When you have a undefeated streak going into the playoffs it is added and unnecessary pressure on the players shoulders, so the loss was a way to keep their feet grounded and keep them focused.

I am not a little sore about the Welker thing and was just having fun thinking about how ironic it would be if the Colts decision to rest their starters not only cost them their perfect season but also eliminated them from the playoffs they were so desperately trying to prepare for. I agree with both you and Rodney that the league should not dictate when stars should be rest and when they should not be but I will tell you one thing, if the Colts lose, which is a big if, all Colts fans will seriously question the move...even you
